Where Famous People RIP – Ahol a hírességek nyugszanak

Famous people always seem to capture  (megragad) our attention – in life and in death – yet the final resting places (végső nyúgvóhely) of celebrities, explorers, politicians, gangsters and legends are also fascinating  (lenyűgöző) places to visit. Take a global tour of burial sites (temetkezési hely) where some of history’s most intriguing (érdekes) people are laid to rest.

Dracula

We welcome you to the final resting place of Romanian Prince Vlad Tepes. The inspiration (ihlet) for the fictional character Dracula is spending eternity (örökkévalóság) at Snagov Monastery (kolostor) in Romania, just north of Bucharest. It couldn’t be more perfect or more spooky (kísérteties): The monastery is on a remote (távoleső) island you can get to only by rowboat (evezőscsónak), and Vlad’s headless body is said to be buried within the stone walls – though archaeologists (régész) who opened his tomb (sír) in the 1930s found an empty coffin (koporsó).

Michael Jackson

With the world in mourning (gyászol), the King of Pop was laid to rest Aug. 29, 2009, on what would have been his 51st birthday. His public memorial (nyílvános megemlékezés) was watched on television by millions – 31 million in the U.S. alone – but he rests in peace, and out of public view (nyílvánosság kizárásával), at the Holly Terrace of the Great Mausoleum in Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Glendale, Calif.  The exterior (külső) of the mausoleum, shown here, is a central part of this huge cemetery, which also is the final resting place for Walt Disney, Clark Gable, Humphrey Bogart, Lucille Ball, George Burns and many others.

Diana, Princess of Wales

After the 1997 Paris car accident that took her life, Princess Diana was laid to rest at her family’s 500-year-old Althorp estate (birtok) in quiet, rural (vidéki) Northamptonshire, England. Nineteen of the rooms are open to the public (a közönség számára nyitva) during the summer, and six rooms are dedicated to (ajánlva) Diana’s life and charity work. Her school reports and famous wedding gown (esküvői ruha) are on display (kiállítva), among many other personal effects. While her gravesite (sírhely) is closed to public viewing, the memorial museum, beautiful park and grounds, as well as the house itself, are all worth a visit (megér egy látogatást).

Julius Caesar

General, politician and leader of Rome, Julius Caesar was stabbed (leszúrták) multiple times (többször) by conspirators (összeesküvők) in the Roman Senate on March 15, 44 B.C. The Via Sacra (Sacred (szent) Way), which runs through the middle of the Forum, passes old columns and the remains of majestic arches. The Basilica Julia and the Curia (Roman Senate) are noble (csodálatos) reminders of Julius Caesar’s reign (uralkodás). However, you have to look a little harder to find the plot where his ashes (hamvai) are reportedly interred (elásva), a nondescript (iratlan) pile of stone frequently strewn with flowers.

Elvis Presley

The King of Rock ’n’ Roll died Aug. 16, 1977, and is buried in the Meditation Garden at Graceland Mansion in Memphis, next to his parents, Vernon and Gladys. Every year to mark the anniversary of his death, fans celebrate his music, movies and life during Elvis Week, which culminates (eléri a csúcspontját) with a candlelight vigil (virrasztás).
